Wine of Guria
Hillsides above the Black Sea, and a pale red worth the detour.
Guria is small, steep and close enough to the sea that the air is soft even in winter. Chkhaveri, its main grape, is picked late and gives a pale, almost rose-coloured red that tastes nothing like a Kakhetian Saperavi. Production is tiny and mostly for the family table, so listings here are few and the welcome tends to be a long one.

Chkhaveri is picked in November, sometimes December, later than almost any grape in Georgia, and it makes a red so pale that people regularly send it back thinking it is a rose.
