The family
Racha is the highest wine region in Georgia and the smallest. The Meskhi family work terraces at nine hundred metres where the season is short enough that in a bad year they make nothing at all.
Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli ripen late here and come in with a great deal of sugar. Fermentation stops on its own when the cellar gets cold, which is where the naturally semi-sweet red the region is known for comes from — no sugar is added and none is removed. Tinatin Meskhi is precise about this because people assume otherwise.
The road up is slow. Allow two hours from Kutaisi and do not attempt it in winter.
