Wine of Samegrelo
Subtropical, rainy, and home to one great red grape.
Rain falls on Samegrelo most of the year, which historically pushed the vines up into trees and off the wet ground — a training method you can still see in village gardens. The grape that matters here is Ojaleshi, harvested very late, sometimes into December, and made into a dark red with real structure. Very few families bottle it, so a visit is often the only way to taste it.

Gabunia Ojaleshi
Ojaleshi grows up trees in Samegrelo, or used to — the name means "growing on a tree" — and the Gabunia family still keep a dozen old vines that way in the garden, alongside a proper trellised hectare planted in 2009.
